El Peñol, Guatapé and the reservoir
El Peñol is a useful starting point for planning a visit to the rock, the surrounding reservoir and Guatapé. The names need a little care: Piedra del Peñol and Peñón de Guatapé refer to the same rock, while present-day El Peñol and Guatapé are separate towns. The old settlement of El Peñol belongs to the history of the reservoir and its displaced community.
The water around the islands and peninsulas is a reservoir created for hydroelectric power. Its shape is part of the landscape you see from the rock, from the road and on a boat trip. Guatapé adds a different experience at street level: coloured façades, wooden balconies and zócalos, the decorative reliefs along the lower walls of houses.
Start with the experience that matters most to you. Climbing calls for time and physical effort; a town walk gives more attention to the façades; a boat trip changes the viewing angle. You can plan a visit around the town without making the summit your main objective.

How to choose a day out
The day trip with breakfast, lunch, a reservoir boat ride and an animal-farm visit combines several parts of the area in a single programme. Its rock climb costs extra, and hotel pickup comes only with the paid pickup option. The excursion with the old-Peñol replica also includes breakfast, lunch and a boat ride, while rock admission is extra. These differences matter more than the number of attractions in a tour title.
For a solo traveller, the private motorcycle excursion offers an altogether different journey. It starts from an agreed location in Medellín, includes a helmet, breakfast and lunch, and visits El Peñol, the replica, the rock and Guatapé. Rock admission is extra. Choose it for the motorcycle format and individual guiding; the boat ride is a separately paid activity on that programme.
Another choice is the small-group day with a maximum of 18 travellers, a guided town visit, boat ride, breakfast and lunch. Pickup covers selected hotels in El Poblado and Laureles, with an extra fee for other areas. The private helicopter combination instead includes rock admission, a six-minute flight and a 45-minute boat ride; food is extra. Read the day-trip comparison to match transport, meals and stops.

Plan the climb and the waterfront separately
The rock visit guide explains cash payment in Colombian pesos, the stairway ascent and arrival planning. Allow room for your own pace rather than treating the climb as a fixed interval between other bookings. A visit to the base of the rock and an admission ticket for the ascent are different elements of an excursion.
In Guatapé, the Parque Principal, Calle del Recuerdo, Malecón and the church exterior give a town visit its shape. The zócalos depict local work, plants, animals and everyday life. Take time to look at the reliefs individually instead of using the streets only as a stop for photographs. Our Guatapé walking guide keeps that visit separate from the climb.
For time on the reservoir, distinguish a sightseeing outing from a sports activity. Wear a life jacket from boarding throughout the boat journey. Alcohol consumption during navigation is prohibited under the transport ministry’s June 2026 notice, updated in July 2026. Consult the boat-trip guide for the different combinations and the water-sports page for local rental versus a trip with transport.
Your wider Colombia route
Use Medellín as the starting point for organising this excursion, and keep its city visits on a separate day in your route. For the graffiti part of a wider itinerary, continue with Comuna 13. Guatapé’s façade reliefs have their own local subjects and deserve a different description.
If your wider Colombia journey also includes Cartagena de Indias or the Rosario Islands, use their dedicated guides for those stops. Here, concentrate on the rock, the towns and the reservoir. Before settling your dates, read about getting here, accommodation areas and visit timing. Keep the return journey in view, particularly when travelling at the weekend.

Frequently asked questions
Is this the official El Peñol website?
This is an independent visitor guide, separate from the rock operator and the municipal authorities of El Peñol and Guatapé.
Are Piedra del Peñol and Peñón de Guatapé different rocks?
Both names refer to the same rock. Guatapé and present-day El Peñol are separate towns, and the replica represents the old settlement.
Does every excursion include rock admission?
Inclusions differ. Some day trips visit the rock with the climb paid separately, while the private helicopter combination includes admission. Choose by the individual programme.
